In Lagos, 26 individuals have been convicted by a Magistrate Court in Ikoyi for engaging in illegal waste disposal throughout the state.
These offenders, apprehended by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), were found disposing of their refuse in unauthorized locations between 9:30 p.m. and 7 a.m.
As part of their punishment, they were sentenced to community service or a ₦30,000 fine per person.
This enforcement action aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s zero-tolerance policy for environmental violations, and LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the need for residents to support these efforts by responsibly managing their waste.
He also stressed that recklessness and disregard for the environment will no longer be tolerated, and that the enforcement will continue.
