The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised a public alarm concerning the G Fuel brand Energy Drinks distributed by T&E Imports and GPAE Trading Corp, which have been recalled due to their high caffeine content.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, released a public notice (NAFDAC/PR/034/2023) in Abuja, where she mentioned that the recall was initiated based on alerts from the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Furthermore, Prof. Adeyeye cautioned pregnant women against consuming these products, citing potential health risks such as an increased risk of miscarriage and low birth weight associated with excessive caffeine intake.

She also pointed out that the implicated products lacked clear instructions regarding the daily recommended servings and were available for purchase online.

In her statement, Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that these products were not registered with NAFDAC, and she advised both consumers and retailers against using, selling, serving, or distributing them.

For inquiries and reporting adverse events related to NAFDAC-regulated products, individuals may contact NAFDAC at 0800-162-3322 or sf.alert@nafdac.

Healthcare providers and patients are encouraged to report any adverse effects through the nearest NAFDAC office. Additionally, NAFDAC can be reached via email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng. The NAFDAC website, www.nafdac.gov.ng, and the Med-safety app, available for download on Android and iOS stores, can also be used to reach out to NAFDAC.
