In Imo State, civil servants, primarily information officers, took to the streets in protest following an alleged assault on their colleague, Unegbu Chimaobi, during the performance of his official duties.

Precious Izuogu, the son of the state’s Local Government Service Commission chairman, is accused of the attack.

The demonstrators marched from the Local Government Commission office to the Head of Service’s office at the state secretariat in Owerri, carrying placards with slogans like Enough Is Enough, Civil Servants Are Not Slaves, We Demand Justice.

Mrs. Bibian Okere, the representative of the information officers, expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the potential risks faced by information officers if such assaults persist.

She urged the Head of Service to investigate the matter and ensure justice for Unegbu Chimaobi.

Okere stressed the commitment of information officers to the success of the Shared Prosperity Government under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s leadership.

In response, Hon. Raymond Ucheoma, the Head of Service, commended the workers for their solidarity, assuring them that measures, including Unegbu’s hospital treatment, had been taken to address the situation.

Ucheoma highlighted the significance of information officers in conveying governance realities and assured them of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s commitment to their safety.

He also mentioned that the House of Assembly’s Committee on Information would investigate the incident, with a promise to bring the perpetrators to justice.
