The Kano State Government has revealed that 3,234 individuals, including students and minors, were unlawfully drawing salaries within the public service, having been irregularly hired during the previous administration.
Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, disclosed these findings during a media briefing on the outcomes of a government committee investigating unauthorized recruitment.
Governor Abba Yusuf had previously halted the salaries of more than 10,000 public servants hired improperly in the previous administration’s final days.
The committee’s report highlighted the oversight of the previous administration in hastily recruiting workers without considering the financial implications within the 2023 budget.
Dr. Bichi expressed dismay, stating, It is sad to discover that the majority of those recruited did not go through the former screening exercise, while some got the job with fake certificates.
He further informed that the committee recommended offering jobs in the public service to 9,332 qualified individuals.
The government pledged to take appropriate disciplinary measures against implicated civil servants, adhering to civil service regulations.
Dr. Bichi emphasized that sanctions would extend to the mother of a 13-year-old girl who admitted receiving salaries through her mother’s account, holding a position in the public service.
