Bright Omokaro, former Nigerian international, remarks that representing Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has evolved into an open opportunity, with players on foreign club benches now making it to the Super Eagles team, unlike the stringent selection process during his 1970s playing days.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday, Omokaro expressed concern about the inclusion of players not considered first-choice in their respective teams, emphasizing the ease of entry into the Super Eagles for those associated with foreign clubs, regardless of their division.
Reflecting on his era, Omokaro highlighted the rigorous efforts players like John Fasanu had to put in to secure a spot in the national squad, stating, If you don the Nigerian jersey, you have obviously proven yourself to be worthy.
Expressing disappointment in the exclusion of home-based players, he suggested revisiting the idea of mandating a certain percentage of homegrown talents in the national team to foster football development.
Despite the changes, Omokaro believes that a balance between the current landscape and past practices could contribute to the overall improvement of Nigerian football.
The Super Eagles, aiming for their fourth AFCON title, kick off the tournament on Saturday.
