In Obosi, Anambra State, a church service took a terrifying turn as a man believed to be mentally ill disrupted the gathering, wielding a machete.

Eyewitnesses revealed the chaotic scene as the man, previously seen wandering near the church, burst in during the service, attacking a congregant in the front row.

Despite attempts by churchgoers to restrain him, the man continued his rampage, prompting intervention from authorities.

During a prayer session, the man, suspected of mental illness, struggled with the pastor and others, seizing a machete from the altar.

His violent actions resulted in serious injuries to a church member. Subsequent efforts by the pastor to heal the man exacerbated the situation, leading to the need for police involvement.

The injured churchgoer was rushed to a nearby hospital, while the assailant was subdued and taken into custody.

Anambra State Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga commended the church members for their prompt response and assured the public that the incident is under investigation.

Both the pastor and the man in question are in police custody. The injured victim is responding well to treatment, but the police emphasize the importance of public safety and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

The incident sheds light on the pressing issue of mental health awareness in Nigeria, where up to 20% of the population may face mental health challenges.

Stigma and misunderstanding persist, highlighting the need for early identification and improved access to mental health services.

While physical injuries are treatable, the emotional impact underscores the importance of support and counseling for all affected parties.

This event emphasizes the necessity of enhanced mental health care and services in Nigeria, urging increased funding, professional training, and the promotion of dignity and respect for those grappling with mental health conditions.
