In Oke Afa Market, Isolo, and Katangua Market, Abule Egba, the Lagos State government has sealed the two markets due to unhygienic practices, leading to environmental pollution.
This statement was signed by Mrs. Folashade, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
Wahab cautioned that any market or facility involved in irresponsible sewage disposal would face disciplinary action. The only acceptable practice for markets and traders is to adopt proper and civilized sewage disposal methods outlined by LAWMA.
The commissioner assured residents that the markets would remain sealed until adequate hygiene and waste disposal measures are implemented and compliance is maintained.
The health and well-being of our people are crucial. We cannot allow a few individuals to jeopardize the health of many through irresponsible environmental practices, emphasized the commissioner.
Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, instructed people to mobilize the market and adhere to rules and regulations, including the use of provided dustbins.
Gbadegesin emphasized, Do not dispose of waste recklessly; use the dustbins to prevent environmental pollution. Anyone disrupting the market will be required to promptly pay their waste bills.
Furthermore, Gbadegesin appealed to market executives to exert more effort in mobilizing their members to engage in responsible practices for the benefit of the environment and everyone involved.
