The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a stern warning urging the public to refrain from spreading false information regarding the ongoing security situation in Mangu, Plateau State.
This caution comes in response to what the military terms as misleading and malicious information circulating on various social media platforms. The DHQ emphasizes the importance of relying on official sources for accurate updates and advises against actions that could escalate tensions further.
The DHQ’s response follows a video shared by Reverend Timothy Daluk, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Mangu, alleging military complacency and bias in handling the crisis that erupted on January 23, 2024, in Magu, Plateau State.
The DHQ categorically denies these claims and urges Reverend Daluk to retract his statements and apologize for any distress caused by his remarks.
The military asserts that the circulated video is intentionally misleading and aims to discredit the efforts of deployed personnel addressing security challenges in the Mangu area.
It reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Plateau State and across Nigeria while urging the public to disregard misinformation and rely solely on official channels for updates.
In addition to clarifying the security situation, the DHQ calls for refraining from activities that could exacerbate tensions and undermine security efforts. It stresses zero tolerance towards attempts to undermine military operations or spread false information.
The military urges citizens to cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information for conflict prevention and resolution.
Furthermore, the DHQ emphasizes collaboration with stakeholders, including local communities and traditional leaders, to address underlying causes of conflict and foster sustainable peace in Plateau State.
It underscores the importance of responsible and objective media reporting, offering to facilitate accurate information dissemination to contribute to peacebuilding efforts.
Addressing root causes such as poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, and environmental degradation, the military collaborates with government agencies and civil society organizations to promote sustainable peace.
It emphasizes reconciliation and dialogue between communities and ethnic groups, urging peaceful resolution of differences. Additionally, it calls on religious leaders to promote harmony, while urging the government to address socio-economic challenges in Plateau State for a brighter future.
