During a visit to the fire-ravaged Eziukwu Road market in Aba, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State assured traders of the market’s renovation and upgrade to contemporary standards.
Governor Otti made this commitment after evaluating the extensive damage caused by the fire outbreak.
To fulfill his promise, Otti has instructed relevant government agencies to immediately initiate plans for modernizing the market.
Governor Otti noted the deplorable state of many shops, emphasizing the need for modernization and renovation, as several shops’ structural integrity was in question.
He stated, Many of these shops require modernization, renovation, and in some cases, reconstruction. Just as I pledged for Ngwa Road, the same will be done here.
Observing the precarious condition of the shops, Otti emphasized the urgency to prevent potential collapses, asserting the responsibility of the government to intervene.
He directed authorities, including the General Manager of the Greater Aba Development Agency, to promptly begin efforts to modernize the market.
While sympathizing with fire victims, Otti pledged assistance to help them recover from their losses.
He urged traders to exercise caution to prevent future fire disasters, referencing a recent incident at the Ngwa Road market.
During the visit, Governor Otti was accompanied by government officials including Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, Commissioner for Lands and Housing, and Mr. Uche Ukaeje, Director-General of GADA, alongside other government representatives.
