Comrade Ben Asogwa, Chairman of the Enugu State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, has announced the reinstatement of previously terminated Enugu State Water Corporation employees.
Asogwa, alongside other labor leaders, conveyed that the decision to terminate 20 workers lacked approval from the state governor.
According to Asogwa, Governor Peter Mbah expressed disapproval of the dismissals and assured the workers of his commitment to their welfare. Consequently, Governor Mbah directed all affected employees to resume their duties promptly.
Acknowledging the governor’s support for workers, Asogwa emphasized the importance of adherence to the law and diligence in service delivery.
While the corporation had initially discharged workers citing reasons such as inefficiency and unsatisfactory performance, the legality of the management’s actions remained contentious.
Despite this, the state government, under Governor Mbah’s leadership, invested efforts in revitalizing water infrastructure, significantly increasing water production.
However, challenges persist in revenue collection, with the Corporation struggling to achieve its financial targets despite adequate water supply. The discrepancy raises concerns about leakages and mismanagement within the organization.
In light of these issues, there is a consensus that reforms are necessary to address systemic inefficiencies while upholding due process and the rule of law, as emphasized by the governor.
