The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) witnessed parallel primaries resulting in the selection of the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Philip Shaibu, as the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming September 21 election.

Delegates convened both at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and a venue on Commercial Avenue, Benin City, where Shaibu was declared the chosen candidate amidst allegations of irregularities including unauthorized delegates and opposition party members listed for accreditation.

Bartholomew Moses officially declared Shaibu the winner with 301 votes, yet the event was marred by a sudden invasion of gunmen, causing chaos and scattering attendees in fear for their safety.

Prior to the parallel elections, Festus Owu’s group protested their disenfranchisement at the deputy governor’s residence. Shaibu reassured them, urging peaceful conduct and promising to address their grievances with the election committee.

Addressing journalists, Shaibu reiterated his commitment to fairness, emphasizing the importance of authentic delegates in ensuring the legitimacy of the electoral process, despite challenges posed by the presence of unauthorized participants.
