Former lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has emphasized the necessity to update the Oronsaye Report before its implementation, citing its outdated nature.
Sani expressed this viewpoint during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The Oronsaye Report, commissioned in 2012 to rationalize and restructure federal government parastatals, commissions, departments, and agencies, has been rendered obsolete according to Sani.
He highlighted the proliferation of new agencies and commissions since the report’s inception, indicating a need for its revision to reflect current realities.
Sani criticized the prevailing practice where legislators’ performance is evaluated based on the number of bills they sponsor or the creation of federal agencies and commissions resulting from their initiatives.
This approach, he argued, does not align with the country’s economic circumstances and contributes to the excessive number of federal entities.
Highlighting the country’s limited resources amidst a large population of 224 million, Sani underscored the need to scrutinize the relevance and usefulness of the agencies created.
He advocated for the implementation of the Oronsaye Report but suggested that it should first undergo updating to incorporate new commissions and agencies.
Sani proposed that the President should convene Oronsaye and his committee to update the report in light of the developments since its publication.
