Ezekwesili Reaffirms Stance Against New National Anthem.

Former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili has reaffirmed her opposition to adopting the new national anthem signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

Ezekwesili voiced her stance in response to a video of Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu rejecting the newly adopted anthem by sitting during its recitation at a recent event.

Supporting Yesufu’s protest, Ezekwesili stated, #AishaYesufu, Definitely #NotMyNationalAnthem as I already publicly conveyed.

In my case, whenever and wherever the National Anthem is called for, I shall continue to sing #AriseOCompatriots as #MyNationalAnthem.

Ezekwesili criticized the lawmakers and the President for breaching constitutional provisions and processes for amending legislation, asserting that they cannot impose a new national anthem on the public.

She declared, I refuse to join them in the Kangaroo Act of violating the Constitution. Nigeria is a Constitutional Democracy and must be so governed.

Her stance follows a previous statement that no one could suppress her right to dissent from what she termed an obnoxious law.

On Wednesday, Ezekwesili reiterated that she would not revert to the old national anthem, recently signed by President Tinubu as the new anthem.
