To avert a planned nationwide strike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the leadership of the Nigeria Governors Forum have summoned an emergency meeting with the leaders of the Organized Labour for tonight, sources informed our correspondent on Sunday afternoon.
A meeting has been called by the Senate President and the Nigeria Governors Forum, set for tonight, a well-informed source disclosed.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced the strike following unsuccessful negotiations between the government and organized labour.
Despite the government’s final offer of N60,000, recently increased from an initial N57,000, the labour unions found the proposal insufficient.
During negotiations, labour revised its demand, lowering it by N3,000 from the initial N497,000 to N494,000.
However, the government’s firm stance on N60,000 led to a deadlock, resulting in the declaration of the indefinite strike.
