The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has criticized the federal government’s student loan scheme, calling it unsustainable. The union advocates for improved university funding, university autonomy, and academic freedom.

The Ebonyi State University chapter of ASUU highlighted the chronic underfunding of Nigeria’s education system, which has adversely affected public primary and secondary schools.

The union is committed to resisting such diversionary policies and is demanding the renegotiation of its terms.

ASUU Chairman Dr. Ikechuku Igwenyi stressed that the student loan scheme fails to address the core issues facing university education, such as underfunding, non-payment of earned academic allowances, and threats to university autonomy and academic freedom.
