The Nigerian Federal Government has called on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and other international media organizations to ensure accurate, balanced, and fair coverage of Nigeria’s affairs.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this appeal during a meeting with a BBC delegation in Abuja.
Idris stressed the need for ethical journalism, noting that while Nigeria faces challenges like any other nation, it is vital for global media to present a comprehensive and nuanced view.
He commended the BBC for its longstanding relationship of trust with the Nigerian audience and its growth across multimedia platforms within the country.
The BBC delegation, led by Jonathan Munro, Director of Global News and Deputy CEO, expressed satisfaction with the BBC’s strong reputation in Nigeria, noting its weekly reach of 30 million people.
The Minister also urged the BBC to expand its capacity-building programs to include private media outlets, emphasizing the government’s expectation that media should adhere to the principles of accuracy, balance, and fairness in reporting.
