Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) has recently expelled twelve students for illegal possession of firearms, while four others have been suspended for various offenses such as stealing and involvement in cultism.
The decision was formally approved by the University Senate, underlining the institution’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct.
In a statement shared on social media, the 266th Regular Senate of ABSU announced the expulsion and suspension of students who had breached their matriculation oaths.
These actions were taken following thorough investigations into cases involving armed theft, cultism, illegal firearm possession, damaging the University’s reputation, exam malpractice, and other violations.
Additionally, the statement clarified that four students who were allegedly involved in cultism but were deemed victims of circumstances would receive warning letters.
Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, the Vice-Chancellor, emphasized his administration’s determination to combat all forms of student criminality and confirmed that the Senate Committee is investigating allegations of extortion and sexual harassment by staff members.
Those found guilty will be subject to appropriate sanctions as per university regulations.
The university’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Chijoke, indicated that the number of students facing sanctions may be higher, and a comprehensive list is being prepared for public disclosure.
The management of ABSU remains committed to upholding discipline and applying necessary sanctions when misconduct is identified.
