The Akwa-Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, requested the Federal Government’s backing to advance the Ibom Deep Seaport project during discussions with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

Eno emphasized the necessity of a seaport in Nigeria’s South-South region, citing congestion in existing ports, particularly in Lagos.

The Ibom Deep Seaport, situated in the South-East of Akwa Ibom State, aims to be a deep-water facility with a natural draft of about 17.5 meters, allowing it to accommodate large vessels and handle various cargo types.

The project, a partnership between the Federal Government, Akwa Ibom State Government, and private investors, has faced delays despite receiving approval in 2015.

Governor Eno stressed the port’s significance in easing congestion and serving the South-East, South-South, and Niger Delta regions.

Additionally, discussions included plans for the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul of sections of Akwa Ibom International Airport, with Eno awaiting approval from the Federal Government.

This marks Eno’s second meeting with President Tinubu since assuming office in May 2023, highlighting the ongoing efforts to garner support for crucial regional projects.
