The Anambra State government, led by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, issued a stern warning to Onitsha landlords, emphasizing the imperative to uphold the city’s reputation as the economic hub of the state.
Addressing landlords from Onitsha South Local Government Area at the council secretariat, Dr. Ibezim unveiled a groundbreaking initiative: a N10 million prize awaits the first street in Onitsha to complete repainting its structures between February 1 and March 10, 2024.
During the meeting, Dr. Ibezim highlighted concerns regarding inadequate soakaway pits, which, when present, often discharge into the Sakamori drainage system and Nwangene River, posing health hazards to residents and tarnishing the city’s image as sub-Saharan Africa’s largest commercial center.
The government’s focus extends beyond aesthetics; it aims to address the deteriorating condition of roads leading to the seaport and within the market area. Dr. Ibezim urged landlords to participate in efforts to unclog drains, eliminate waste dumps, plant trees, and undertake home renovations to enhance the appeal of the environment.
Commissioner Felix Odimegwu emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, citing statistics from the World Health Organization attributing 60% of diseases to environmental factors.
He underscored the significance of cleanliness, air quality, and overall health in sustaining a thriving community.
Chief Emeka Joseph Orji, local council chairman, pledged to enforce cleanliness standards and dismantle unauthorized structures obstructing culverts, affirming the commitment to restoring Onitsha to its rightful status.
Michael Okonkwo, Chairman of the Urban Regeneration Council, expressed aspirations to emulate standards observed in developed nations, envisioning Onitsha as a global exemplar of business-friendly and health-conscious urban living.
In response, Chief Ignatius Agabarugo, representing Fegge landlords, expressed readiness to collaborate with the government but raised concerns about alleged extortion by unscrupulous elements during building renovations.
He urged the government to address issues of double taxation and property levies to facilitate cooperation and progress.
The initiative underscores the government’s resolve under Governor Charles Soludo’s leadership to enhance environmental sustainability and align with national calls for a cleaner, healthier society.
As Onitsha embarks on this transformative journey, collaboration between stakeholders and decisive action will be pivotal in realizing its full potential.
