Concerns are mounting among Calabar residents as the specter of insecurity in Cross River State looms over the upcoming December Calabar Carnival.
The city has witnessed a surge in kidnapping cases, targeting professionals like doctors, lawyers, professors, and government officials, prompting fears of overshadowing this year’s carnival festivities.
Residents are calling on the government and security agencies to urgently address the crisis. The recent 40-day strike by the Nigerian Medical Association, triggered by the kidnapping of Professor Ekanem Ephraim, underscores the gravity of the situation.
Dr. Felix Archibong, NMA Chairman, warns that the state’s livability is at stake, potentially deterring investors and tourists.
While Governor Bassey Otu condemns kidnapping and offers rewards for information leading to arrests, residents emphasize the need for concrete actions beyond mere condemnation.
Commissioner of Police Gyogon Grimah acknowledges detentions but stresses the necessity for further measures to ensure security ahead of the December carnival.
