In a recent ruling, the Lagos Federal High Court has ordered the EFCC to pay a fine of ₦3 million to Margaret Emefiele, wife of the former CBN Governor.
Judge Deinde Dipeolu found the EFCC guilty of unlawfully declaring Margaret wanted without proper legal authority.
Margaret Emefiele, represented in court, demanded the removal of her name and photo from the wanted list and legal action against the EFCC for violating her fundamental rights.
Judge Dipeolu emphasized that the EFCC’s actions, including publishing Margaret’s name and photo without adhering to the ACJA 2015, constituted a breach of her rights to life, personal liberty, dignity, freedom of movement, and security.
The court directed the EFCC to retract the publication, issue a public apology on their website, and compensate Margaret Emefiele with ₦3 million for the infringement of her rights.
