In a tragic incident, a Catholic church in Essakane village, situated in Burkina Faso’s three borders zone, became the target of a terrorist attack during Sunday mass.

The vicar of the Dori diocese, Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, reported that the attack resulted in the death of at least 15 civilians, with two others sustaining injuries.

Expressing profound concern, Sawadogo urged for peace and security in Burkina Faso while condemning those responsible for the ongoing violence and devastation in the country.

This assault is the most recent in a series of atrocities carried out by jihadist groups in the region, with some specifically targeting Christian churches and others involving the abduction of clergy.

Burkina Faso, located in the Sahel region, has been grappling with an upsurge in violent extremism since the aftermath of Libya’s civil war in 2011 and the subsequent Islamist takeover of northern Mali in 2012.

The government and security forces are tirelessly working to combat this escalating threat and ensure the safety of its citizens.
