The Kano State Police Command has apprehended Yusuf Haruna, an 18-year-old, for allegedly murdering Imam Mallam Mohammed Shuaibu.
The incident unfolded following the Imam’s counsel to Haruna and friends to cease smoking marijuana in the mosque, leading to a fatal knife attack.
The arrest has prompted community outrage, shedding light on the escalating drug use among the youth in the state.
A statement from the Kano State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed Haruna’s arrest and provided details of the crime.
The police expressed condolences to the deceased Imam’s family and urged calm in the community. The statement emphasized the importance of cooperation from the public to aid in the ongoing investigation.
The PPRO revealed in the statement that Haruna, also known as Lagwatsani, from Dala Local Government Area, was responsible for the senseless murder of the 45-year-old Imam.
The suspect attacked the Imam during ablution with a sharp knife, enraged by the Imam’s earlier warning against marijuana use near the mosque.
The PPRO stressed the police’s commitment to justice and deterrence, highlighting the recovery of the murder weapon and the suspect’s confession.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Usaini Gumel, assured the public of a thorough investigation. He extended condolences to the Imam’s family and urged community cooperation.
The commissioner emphasized the dual purpose of holding the perpetrator accountable and deterring future crimes, urging prompt reporting of suspicious activities to prevent further violence.
The statement concluded by revealing the suspect’s criminal history and the Imam’s well-respected status in the community. The CP reiterated the commitment to community safety, encouraging vigilance and prompt reporting to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents.
