Former Guinea junta leader, Moussa Camara, escapes prison with the help of armed men in Conakry.
Alongside three high-ranking officers, he was freed from Central House prison early on a Saturday morning. The Justice Minister, Charles Wright, confirmed the incident, and military vehicles and special forces patrolled the streets of Conakry after gunshots were reported in the Kaloum administrative district, where the prisoners were held.
The escape occurred around 0500 GMT. Guinea has closed its borders to prevent the escapees from leaving the country.
Camara and his associates have been on trial for their alleged involvement in a stadium massacre and mass rape during a pro-democracy rally in 2009.
Camara denies responsibility, and the situation in Conakry appeared to calm later in the day under the leadership of military leader Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup, making Guinea one of several West and Central African countries currently ruled by military officers.
