The Kano State Government has affirmed its commitment to initiate the disbursement of a N20,000 wage award for state and local government workers over a six-month period starting from December 2023.
Additionally, pensioners are set to receive N15,000 for three months from the same period. This wage award aims to alleviate the challenges arising from the recent fuel subsidy removal in the country.
The agreement was reached after extensive discussions between the government and representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and Joint Public Service Negotiation Council.
The signed agreement ensures the prompt distribution of the wage award to eligible civil servants and pensioners in the state. The negotiations were facilitated by the committee appointed by Governor Abba Yusuf.
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kabiru, expressed gratitude to the state government, Committee Chairman Baffa Sani Gaya, Special Adviser on Labour Matters, and other labor leaders involved for their collaborative efforts in reaching this decision.
The State NLC chapter had previously urged the government to swiftly implement the wage award or face potential strike action.
