James Onoja, the council chairman of Igalamela Local Government Area in Kogi State, was purportedly apprehended by security operatives on Saturday.
The arrest was made on charges of possessing ammunition and a significant amount of cash, both reportedly intended for use during the upcoming elections.
The money and ammunition were found packed in multiple ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags. A video circulating online captures the suspects sitting near an army checkpoint, expressing regret and pleading for forgiveness.
Despite attempts to obtain information, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, William Ovye, remained unresponsive.
Meanwhile, allegations of vote-buying and low voter turnout have cast a shadow over the ongoing elections, prompting calls for cancellation from the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dino Melaye, specifically in five LGAs in the state.
