In the 2023 Ballon d’Or Awards, Lionel Messi, the Argentine captain, secured his legendary eighth win as the best football player of the season.
Messi, at 36 years old, led Argentina to their first World Cup title since 1986 and claimed the Golden Ball award in the Qatar tournament.
He also added to his accolades by winning the French title with Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami and assisting them in securing their first-ever Leagues Cup title in August.
On the women’s side, the prolific Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmatí received the 2023 Ballon d’Or Féminin award, succeeding her teammate Alexia Putellas, who won the prize in 2021 and 2022.
Bonmatí, at 25 years old, led Spain to their maiden Women’s World Cup title in Australia and New Zealand, earning the Golden Ball award. She further contributed to her club’s success by helping them secure La Liga and a second Champions League title, which led to her being honored with the UEFA Player of the Season award in August.
Both Messi and Bonmatí received their awards at a star-studded ceremony in Paris on Monday, October 30.
Messi’s achievement solidifies his status as the most successful player in Ballon d’Or history, surpassing all other players, male and female.
Bonmatí’s victory marks a historic moment for Spanish women’s football, as she becomes the first Spanish player to clinch the Ballon d’Or Féminin award.
This recognition comes at a time when women’s football is experiencing a surge in popularity in Spain.
The Ballon d’Or is a highly esteemed accolade in the world of football, and the 2023 awards rightfully belong to Messi and Bonmatí. Stay tuned for more details.
