The Coalition of Indigenous People in Nasarawa State, gathered at a press conference in Nasarawa State Stadium on November 25th, expressed deep concerns about the diminishing democracy and violations of indigenous rights within the state.

Committed to addressing these issues, they aim to safeguard the rights of all citizens.

The coalition voiced anxiety regarding a recent court judgment overturning the lower tribunal’s decision on technical grounds.

They view this as setting a dangerous precedent against the democratic principle of majority rule.

Emphasizing the need to protect indigenous rights and uphold their votes without compromise, they stressed the importance of preserving the democratic process for equal representation.

Hon. Kefas Elisha Tigga, the convener, strongly asserted that Hon. David Emmanuel Ombugadu of the PDP rightfully won the gubernatorial elections on March 18th, 2023.

The erroneous declaration of Governor Audu Sule by INEC and subsequent legal proceedings have introduced uncertainties and challenges to the democratic process.

The coalition pointed out alleged irregularities and manipulations by the APC, especially in Gayam and Chiroma wards, influencing the vote count beyond accredited numbers.

Despite a 180-day tribunal seating, the APC and Governor Audu Sule failed to substantiate their claims, adding to the frustration among indigenous people. Ensuring a fair and transparent democratic process is crucial.

They decried recent silence and mockery faced by protesters, particularly women, who were labeled as hired crowds and derogatorily termed as prostitutes.

Such remarks raised concerns about the justice system’s integrity and fairness.

International bodies, including the United Nations, African Union, ECOWAS, European Union, and the United States, are urged to intervene and ensure the protection of democratic values and indigenous rights in Nasarawa State.

The coalition’s appeal to the Supreme Court, the judiciary, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and global stakeholders is a strong plea for justice.

Their vote for Hon. David Emmanuel Ombugadu signifies a collective desire for freedom from the control of a select few.

A united front is essential in the pursuit of justice, democratic principles, and the rights of indigenous individuals.
