Deborah Fukop, the newly appointed South-West Zonal Director of the National Examination Council (NECO), met with the Olubadan of Ibadanland to discuss the prevalent issue of examination malpractices in Nigeria.
She emphasized that the responsibility for compromising integrity lies with the supervisors, often teachers, rather than with the council itself.
Fukop made these statements during her introduction as the new zonal director and sought collaboration with the traditional institution to enhance operational efficiency in the region.
Previously, the Olubadan had urged NECO to address the issue of examination malpractices that could harm the institution’s reputation.
Expressing appreciation for the Olubadan’s frank discussion, Fukop stated, “We are well aware of the concerns raised by our esteemed father, and we are committed to maintaining our vital role.
Failing the nation is not an option for us, but it is crucial to recognize that the teachers, who act as our supervisors, bear the responsibility for ensuring the integrity of the examinations.
She continued, We have put in place robust mechanisms to prevent, detect, and address malpractices before, during, and after the examinations.
However, if those entrusted with these responsibilities compromise the system, our hands are tied.
Nonetheless, we are proactive in imposing sanctions on schools and individuals involved, as acknowledged by Your Imperial Majesty.
The Olubadan stressed the importance of NECO’s role as gatekeepers for higher institutions nationwide and urged them to actively combat the issue.
He stated, The destiny of our country rests in your hands, as the results of the national examination, particularly the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, serve as the mandatory admission criteria for our tertiary institutions.
To remain operational, these institutions have no choice but to admit students through your system.
It is your responsibility to ensure the best outcomes for the sake of our future.
While we acknowledge your efforts in addressing the issue through sanctions, we implore you to do even more, considering the significance of our future, emphasized the Olubadan.
