Despite their significant presence and multiple nominations at the 2024 Grammy Awards, Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Davido, and Tems left empty-handed.
Burna Boy contended for Best Global Music Performance, Davido and Tems for Best Global Music Album, while Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake were in the running for Best New Artist. However, none clinched a win.
With a total of 10 nominations among them, the outcome marked a notable letdown for Nigerian artists, extending a drought in Grammy wins since Wizkid’s victory in 2021.
The absence of recognition has sparked debate regarding the Grammys’ acknowledgment of Afrobeats’ global impact, raising questions about the influence of connections and marketing in determining winners.
In the Best African Music Performance category, South African singer Tyla claimed victory with her track Water, surprising many who expected frontrunners Burna Boy, Davido, and Tems to dominate.
Speculation arose that Grammy voters might lack awareness of the African music scene, swayed by Tyla’s international collaborations and marketing strategies.
During the Grammy Premiere ceremony, Burna Boy and Davido faced unexpected defeats in the Best Global Album category, losing to the Indian band Shakti.
Similarly, their loss persisted in the Best Global Music Performance category, where Indian composer Zakir Hussain emerged victorious, blending traditional Indian melodies with Western influences. Some critics argue that African innovation in music is overlooked by Grammy voters.
Lil Durk’s All My Life triumphed over Burna Boy’s Last Last for Best Melodic Rap Performance, despite expectations surrounding Burna Boy’s impactful live rendition of the latter.
Criticism arose regarding the Grammy Awards’ failure to acknowledge global music diversity, spurring calls for category reforms or a dedicated ceremony.
Despite the mixed reactions to Burna Boy’s loss, his gracious response highlights the honor of nomination amidst stiff competition.
In an interview, he expressed gratitude for being part of the conversation, embodying humility in the face of disappointment.
