The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) is set to elevate the standard of officiating in professional boxing through a seminar aimed at enriching the skills and knowledge of ring officials.
This initiative also seeks to ignite interest among aspiring referees and judges in Nigeria’s vibrant professional boxing scene.
To bolster the quality of officiating, NBBofC General Secretary Remi Aboderin has extended an invitation to Daniel van de Wiele, an accomplished international boxing referee/judge from Belgium, who has overseen over 3,700 professional fights worldwide.
Van de Wiele is scheduled to share his wealth of expertise in Nigeria starting December 22.
Aboderin emphasizes the significance of this move, stating, “Bringing in Mr. Van De Wiele is a significant step toward ensuring that our boxing officials are knowledgeable and up to date on the latest developments in ring officiating.
This initiative not only benefits professional boxers but also creates opportunities for boxing enthusiasts aspiring to become officials in Nigeria.
As part of the seminar, Yinka Adeoti, a highly regarded Technical Officer, will conduct a corner care and hand-wrapping workshop.
Additionally, boxers will receive guidance on registering their fights with BoxRec, a leading global database for boxers’ records.
Aboderin highlights the importance of understanding point accumulation and facing opponents to elevate ratings, as BoxRec plays a pivotal role in matchmaking decisions within the same weight class.
