NLC President, Joe Ajaero, recounted the assault he endured in Imo State, explaining that he was handed over to suspected thugs by the police.
This revelation took place during a world press conference in Abuja, a mere 24 hours before the Imo State governorship election.
During the press conference, wearing dark shades to conceal his swollen eyes, Ajaero expressed his disbelief at the severity of the beating he suffered after the security agents delivered him to the thugs.
He mentioned that the NLC had previously informed all security agencies about the planned protest.
He stated, I can’t fathom the brutality I endured. They bound my hands and dragged me on the ground like a common criminal. I am not affiliated with any political party, as alleged.
The Imo Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Okoye Henry, released a statement on the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Police, clarifying the situation.
According to the statement, Joe Ajaero was in Owerri to mobilize workers for a protest rally. However, scuffles and heated arguments arose during the planning, leading to an attack on the NLC President by a mob.
The police took him into protective custody to ensure his safety and provided him with medical attention after the attack, allowing him to proceed with his scheduled activities under adequate security cover.
