Detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has urgently submitted a petition to the British House of Lords, seeking intervention in his case against the Nigerian government.
The dual citizen of Nigeria and the UK advocates for Biafra’s self-determination through his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.
The petition, dated January 18th, 2024, highlights IPOB’s legal registration in the UK as a nonviolent group, despite its terrorist designation in Nigeria.
Kanu recounts his arrest in 2015 and the 2017 military attack on his home, resulting in exile.
The petition details the security forces’ use of live bullets and lethal munitions on civilians, leading to casualties and disappearances.
Notably, a Nigerian High Court in January 2022 declared the military attacks unconstitutional, recognizing them as a breach of Kanu’s fundamental rights and awarded him substantial damages.
