The Ogun state government has closed down Supreme Agro Limited in Igbesa, Ado Odo Local Government Area, citing industrial pollution that has detrimentally impacted the local ecosystem.
Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, revealed that the company ignored multiple complaints from the Igbesa community and failed to address warnings from the Ogun State Environmental Task Force.
Oresanya disclosed that the company had been discharging wastewater directly into the community instead of utilizing effluent treatment facilities to mitigate environmental harm.
He emphasized the hazardous components present in the wastewater, including heavy metals and carcinogenic materials, posing a threat to public health.
Expressing concern over the company’s actions, Oresanya asserted that the state government would not tolerate such behavior that jeopardizes the well-being of the host community residents.
He commended the Igbesa Traditional Council for reporting the company’s environmental misconduct and affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a favorable business environment.
The commissioner concluded by emphasizing the state’s stance against malpractices, declaring that businesses must adhere to international environmental best practices to receive government support and recognition.
