The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the PDP has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu, alleging that he appointed an APC member, Etekamba Umoren, as the Resident Electoral Commissioner for INEC in the state.

The suit, filed by Aniekan Akpan and Harrison Ekpo, Chairman and Secretary of the state PDP, respectively, has been submitted to the Federal High Court in Abuja, with Tinubu, the Senate, and Umoren listed as defendants.

The PDP leaders are contesting Umoren’s appointment, providing evidence of his affiliation with the APC.

They are requesting the court to declare Umoren’s nomination and appointment as REC unlawful and to issue an injunction preventing the Senate from confirming him.

The hearing date for the case is pending, but the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, has expressed the party’s strong opposition to Umoren’s appointment, alleging that it undermines the integrity of INEC and raises concerns about potential manipulation of future elections.

Ologunagba called for a neutral REC to be appointed to ensure the credibility and independence of the electoral system in Akwa Ibom State.
