Sanusi Lamido, the former Emir of Kano, has voiced his approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s move to shift some departments from Abuja to Lagos. He cited Lagos’ superior infrastructure capacity as a rationale for the decision.
Despite facing backlash, particularly from Northern politicians, Sanusi encouraged the CBN to proceed with the relocation.
He emphasized the importance of the CBN Governor standing firm against political pressure, highlighting the risk of continual capitulation if the institution yields once.
Sanusi underscored the significance of the CBN’s decision being guided by principle rather than succumbing to political noise. He urged the CBN to overlook divisive voices and prioritize the greater good.
During his tenure as CBN Governor, Sanusi contemplated relocating departments to Lagos but was hindered by time constraints.
His envisioned move included transferring the Financial System Strategy department and other operational units.
Sanusi dismissed opposition to the relocation, asserting that the CBN already operates branches and cash offices nationwide.
He refuted claims of inadequate office space, suggesting consulting Julius Berger for clarification.
Furthermore, he attributed resistance to the relocation to political motives and a misunderstanding of the central bank’s role.
