Rivers State officials clarified that the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex was necessary due to safety issues with its structure. Bulldozers initiated the demolition on Wednesday morning at the Moscow Road facility in Port Harcourt.
Joseph Johnson, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, conveyed the rationale behind the demolition in a statement issued in Port Harcourt.
He attributed the decision to structural instability caused by a previous fire, rendering the complex unsuitable for legislative activities.
Following the demolition, the state government emphasized providing an alternative site for legislative proceedings while the original complex undergoes reconstruction.
The demolition was deemed necessary after the complex suffered structural damage from an explosive incident, making it visibly unsafe for legislative functions.
In October, an explosion occurred at the Rivers State House of Assembly complex amidst reports of a plan to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Considering the extent of the damage, the state government opted to rebuild the complex, offering a temporary venue for legislative activities in the meantime.
