Let’s look ahead and concentrate on the upcoming presidential election. The recent Supreme Court decision, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, has confirmed Bola Tinubu as the President of Nigeria.
This decision, supported by 12 eminent judges, provides approval for INEC’s declaration. While the election may not have been flawless, it was generally fair.
The Supreme Court’s ruling has shed light on several key aspects. First, it pointed out that INEC didn’t transmit the election results to the IREV portal, which some believe might have affected the vote’s credibility.
However, the Supreme Court clarified that non-transmission to the IREV doesn’t invalidate the results, as it’s not a collation center. What matters is the integrity of results from polling units.
Second, the Supreme Court clarified that there’s no constitutional requirement for a candidate to secure 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to become President.
This emphasizes the distinction between the FCT and the states as intended by the Constitution.
Third, the Supreme Court affirmed the 180-day limit for election case hearings and stressed the importance of not introducing additional evidence beyond what was presented at the court of first instance.
Before the PEPC decision, there was significant pressure on the judiciary, but now the focus has shifted to the leading parties, APC, PDP, and LP, as the nation awaits their actions in the coming months and years.
The Labour Party, in particular, has made a substantial impact in the election, beyond expectations.
The PDP, as the main opposition party, faces challenges after consecutive election losses. It’s crucial for them to accept the results, rebuild the party, and work on reconciling internal differences.
As for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, he has made significant contributions to election jurisprudence and national discourse.
He should continue as a leading opposition figure and statesman, providing ideas for good governance.
With the Supreme Court’s decision, Bola Tinubu can now focus on addressing the country’s numerous challenges, including insecurity, economic issues, and more.
It’s important for all Nigerians to unite, provide feedback on government policies, and work together to achieve the country’s manifest destiny.
