Two teenagers, Jelili and Babatunde, were apprehended while stealing high-tension electricity cables in Arola village, Ede, Osun State. Members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service arrested the 19-year-olds as they were about to flee after cutting the cables from the poles.
The hunters, who had been monitoring the teenagers’ activities for some time, successfully detained them and handed them over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation.
NSCDC spokesperson Kehinde Adeleke confirmed that the suspects are in custody and that the investigation is ongoing.
Thanks to the hunters’ knowledge of the terrain, they were able to lay in wait and catch the suspects in the act. According to the NSCDC spokesperson, the teenagers may be charged in court on Thursday.
This incident underscores the ongoing problem of cable theft in the area, which can cause power outages and other disruptions. The arrest is a significant step forward in combating this issue.
