In an announcement by Eric Meyer, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury Department, the United States has officially partnered with the Nigerian government to combat the financing of terrorism.

Meyer emphasized the importance of ensuring the security and integrity of Nigeria’s financial system, acknowledging its significant role in the nation’s economy and its connections to the US financial system.

Meyer’s focus lies squarely on financial matters related to terrorism, particularly in combating money laundering and other corrupt financial activities that support terrorism.

He stressed the need to create a safe and secure financial system, especially given Nigeria’s robust financial technology sector.

Furthermore, the US Bureau, under the leadership of LoGerfo, has allocated $200 million since 2018 to combat terrorism in the Sahel and West Africa regions.

Their efforts include supporting regional governments in disrupting terrorist resources and networks, conducting investigations and prosecutions related to terrorism, responding to and mitigating terrorist incidents, and addressing the issue of violent extremism.

The collaboration also includes discussions with Nigerian officials to enhance coordination, especially along the border, as part of their regional strategy.
